About WordWise Literacy

WordWise Literacy is an educational platform dedicated to helping students in grades 4–8 rebuild the reading and writing skills they need to succeed in school. This site was designed specifically for parents whose children are struggling with reading, writing, or comprehension in the upper elementary and middle school years. Created by a literacy specialist with more than 20 years of experience in the classroom and instructional coaching, WordWise Literacy shares the proven strategies, assessments, and instructional methods that helped real students strengthen their literacy skills. Every strategy and resource shared on this site has been tested in real classrooms with real students who were struggling with reading and writing, and the methods that worked best are the ones parents are taught to use at home. Here you will find practical tools, easy-to-use resources, and structured online literacy courses that guide parents step-by-step in supporting their child at home. If your child has fallen behind in literacy skills and you are looking for a clear plan to help them catch up, WordWise Literacy was created for you.

Gabrielle Bryant, Ed.S.

For more than two decades, I have worked with students, teachers, and families to strengthen literacy skills and close learning gaps. My work in education began in 2002 as a kindergarten paraprofessional. Encouraged by the teacher I worked alongside, I returned to school at night while continuing to work with students during the day to earn my teaching certification.

By 2007, I had my own second-grade classroom and quickly discovered my passion for helping students become confident readers and writers. Over the next several years, I taught second, fourth, and seventh grades and was honored as Teacher of the Year in 2013. Those classroom experiences gave me a deep understanding of how literacy skills develop—and what happens when foundational skills are missing.

I was later asked to serve as an Academic Coach in English Language Arts and Social Studies, where I worked with teachers across elementary, middle, and high school. In that role, I supported educators with instruction, curriculum design, assessment, and classroom management. While working in classrooms across multiple grade levels, one pattern became very clear: many students struggled most with writing and reading comprehension, and many teachers were looking for more effective ways to teach those skills.

During this time, I continued my own professional learning and earned two advanced degrees in literacy — a Master’s Degree and an Education Specialist (Ed.S.) Degree. These experiences allowed me to deepen my expertise in how students learn to read and write, and how educators can intervene when students fall behind.

In 2018, I returned to the classroom to work directly with sixth-grade students, where I applied and refined the strategies I had studied and coached others to use. Watching middle school students grow in confidence and skill confirmed something I had begun to notice across schools: more students were entering middle school with gaps in their foundational literacy skills.

Wanting to better understand the root of those gaps, I made the unusual decision in 2022 to return to second grade, where many literacy foundations are first built. This experience allowed me to see firsthand how early reading and writing instruction connects to later success—and how disruptions such as the COVID school closures contributed to learning gaps for many students.

Because of this work, I am deeply committed to helping families strengthen literacy foundations before small gaps become major struggles in the upper grades. In 2024, I added a Reading Endorsement to my teaching certification to further expand my expertise in literacy instruction and intervention.

Today, through WordWise Literacy, I share practical strategies, tools, and structured support to help parents guide their children toward stronger reading and writing skills. My goal is simple: to give families a clear plan for helping students in grades 4–8 rebuild the literacy skills they need to succeed in school and beyond.
